Moving is a complicated project, one that you should preferably plan for weeks in advance. It is easy to be stranded on your moving day or even incur extra expenses if you don't adequately prepare for it. Specifically, you should take the following measures to ensure that your moving day proceeds without any hiccups:

Create a Moving Checklist

Moving is tiresome and confusing, especially if you are moving your entire house's contents. There are so many things to take care of that it is easy to forget one or two of them. The best way to forget such hiccups is to create a moving checklist before the actual moving day. The checklist should include all the materials you need for the move and what you need to do at each stage of the move. That way you won't be surprised by lack of packing materials on the moving day and you won't be disappointed when the movers arrive before you are done packing; both things can easily happen if you don't have a checklist.

Take Only What You Need

Carrying unnecessary things will waste your time during packing, loading, and unloading. It may also increase your moving cost because the weight of your items may be a factor in the moving quote. Don't forget that carrying unnecessary things will also increase the nature and number of packing supplies you need. Therefore, take the opportunity to declutter your home and get rid of anything you won't need in your new home; you can donate, sell or throw away the unnecessary items.

Pack an Essentials Box

It is also advisable to pack an essentials box that contains that contains the items you may need on the way or as soon as you arrive. You shouldn't pack such items in the main moving boxes because you may arrive too tired to unpack the boxes. Things like your medication, flashlight, extra clothes, a set of hand tools and toiletries and anything else you can think of that belongs to that group should go into the essentials box. Have the essentials in your car; don't transport them with the movers.

Know What the Movers Cannot Carry

Lastly, you need to confirm with your moving company what they can and cannot carry. This is because every moving company has a list of things it cannot carry due to its internal policy or government regulations. For example, most moving companies won't carry household plants, explosives, and corrosive substances; find out what you moving company cannot carry and arrange alternative transportation for them.
